Westbury walk 16 January 2016

details and summary of the winter get together on saturday 16th january 2016

Where did they all go 16 01 2016

Wessex Wanderers Railway Walks

Winter Get together on Saturday 16th January 2016

The annual winter get together took place on a crisp, dry and frosty morning and the trains ran to time and the walk was attended by around 20 people and there were plenty of stiles, lanes and nice country houses that we passed as well as the many different railway lines that go out of Westbury.  The walk too us in the direction of Dilton Marsh and has a request stop station which is on the Westbury to Portsmouth line – though we did see the train stop there.

We got to the Railway Inn which is a 5 – 10 minute walk from the station and has a large function room and we settled down for our two course lunch where 34 jolly Ramblers had a good lunch of Roast Beef or Vegetarian Wellington (a change from the original menu but this seemed to go down well).  Followed up apple crumble and custard.  A good fare for hungry Ramblers

We had some new faces as well as some older faces and blasts from the past but it was nice to catch up with everyone, espicially at a dull time of year

The trains seemed to behave themselves, but unfortunately having avoided the engineering works that took place over the summer holiday in 2016 in the Box Tunnel area, this was not so good on this one day as the trains up from Weymouth were fine but going back people had to get a coach from Westbury to Castle Cary and then the train back to Weymouth which added an hour to the journey but that seemed to go to plan, which is good

A new coordinator has now been found  for 2016 and Joy Harrison has taken over at the helm and a programme for 2016 is now on the website and the season has 22 walks and starts on Saturday 21st May 2016 and finishes on Wednesday 12th October 2016 – a varied walking programme from urban to rural walks and a guided tour of Trowbridge, the county town of Wiltshire, which will be done by two very expert Blue Badge Guides

A Winter get together for 2017 will take place and probably at the same venue but on a weekday and details will follow in due course but thanks go to those who all turned up and supporting this event and hope to see people over the summer.

Thank you to everyone for the continued support over the years and look forward to seeing you during 2016
